Cultural Renegades

URBAN EYE

Each year Fringe World boasts amazing performances from local and international artists. This year, Cultural Renegades debuted a fusion of dancing and free-verse poetry.

“Exploring the dance cultures of hip hop and dance hall,” Cultural Renegades brought together friends from different upbringings and backgrounds who share the same passion for music, particularly dancehall and hip-hop, explained Director Lisa Crowe.

These cultures resonated with the cast members, bringing passionate and talented dancing to the stage. Breaking up the different genres with a free verse rap allowed the show to follow a loose story line, exploring the characters and relationships you can encounter when heading out on the town.

This storyline was executed through an immersive concept, where the dancers interacting with the crowd and dancing throughout, feeling like you’re on a typical night out.

However, the venue worked against this as performing within the crowd made it difficult to see. A better venue would help the show be more well received and the cultures to be understood more clearly.

Lisa Crowe and her team of 10 dancers created and performed three sold out shows, brought the dance community together and highlighted a platform that others can enjoy.

“I feel I have definitely achieved over and above my original expectations, especially having the show nominated and shortlisted for a Fringe World ‘Dance and Physical Theatre’ award,” Lisa said.

“It was an overwhelming and humbling feeling, and we are all extremely grateful for the support everyone showed Cultural Renegades.”
