The Community Project

URBAN EYE

Isabella Boladeras, director of Unknown Crew, wanted to start a community based project for years but didn’t know where to begin.

Horrific attacks in Syria inspired her to start donating and offer help in any way possible; then realised that the community she belonged to needed to be closer together too.

“Perth is small… the dance scene is even smaller. I thought if as many of us as possible could come together and create, promote positivity, laughter and love, then we as individuals can spread that anywhere we go,” Issy said.

“In my mind this is the way we can all live peacefully around the world.”

The Community Project was created to bring the Perth dance scene together.

The response generated was amazing for Issy and her sister, Angelina.

Posting on Facebook if any urban dancers wanted to learn a set to film, they expected no replies however within minutes dancers from all over Perth were sharing the post with their friends and commenting their interest in joining the project.

Issy explained that 24 dancers came together to work, create and educate one another, sharing their ideas and mentalities. “I opened it up to see who wanted to dance minus all the crews and different studios; who wanted to dance for the sake of dancing and spreading positivity,”

After two 3 hour rehearsals and bonding activities, they filmed the video on Sunday at the Esplanade Youth Community Skate Park, with videography by Andrew McIvor (JustPlay Media).

Despite being the busiest day in Fremantle, filming went exactly how Issy envisioned it. She explained how everyone pushed each other to do their best, there were no complaints and everybody had a great time.

A few passersby stopped and introduced themselves as dancers, and talked about wanting to become apart of the dance community because of how they were exuding the feeling of being a  “dance family” and were clearly having a lot of fun.

“To me the video was the main result, however the rehearsals and bonding activities were real goals that we had already achieved simply through bringing everyone together,”

“It was also a way to give dancers who have never done a video to experience it, promote positivity, show all of the community (not just the dance scene) that it doesn’t matter what crew or area you’re from, we should all be supportive of one another,” she said.

The release date of the video is unconfirmed yet, but keep an eye out on any of the dancers Facebooks’ for the release. Urban Eye will also be sharing the video.

A final message from Issy:

“One of the Unknown’s biggest motivations is to train because we love each other and we love to dance, so all the girls were involved in this project and believe in bringing the scene closer together,”

“Although I still have a lot to learn and i’m still developing within the hip hop world, I would just like to encourage everyone to help each other; especially in hip hop! There are not a lot of us and I would to all be able to learn off each other and build this community together.”

Urban Eye would like to make a shout out to Issy and the Unknown girls for doing something awesome for our dance scene.

Congratulations to all involved, we can’t wait to see the video!
